Relevance

While in Allensworth, Josephine taught piano, organ, and scholastic subjects. She helped found the women's improvement league, which focused on women's issues inside and outside of the African American community. Following the death of her husband in 1914, she remained in Allensworth until she moved to Los Angeles, California in 1922. This is where her story would be spread all over. The story of her Utopia, built by ex-slaves and former trade farmers who were ready to begin a new life in a world of their own creation.
